What is broadband?

Broadband is a term to describe a number of high speed internet access technologies. Examples of the technologies include Fixed Wireless, DSL, Cable and satellite. If you access the Internet for games, music, learning, information, booking flights, sending/receiving pictures, surfing, or running a business you NEED Broadband.

What is wireless?

Wireless (also known as Fixed Wireless) is a proven technology that uses radio signals transmitted from a base station to relay data to/from your computer. Wireless broadband is based on similar principles to television and radio transmissions. To ensure a high level of performance on our broadband network, BBnet utilize a high speed backbone connection to the internet, (known as backhaul) through a well established fibre optic network.

Can I use wireless broadband while I use my landline?

Yes, wireless broadband does not use a phoneline. In fact, wireless broadband gives you the possibility of removing your landline and thus saving on your monthly telephone line rental.

If I am using the Internet more often, will I pay more for wireless broadband?

No, it is a flat cost no matter how much time that you spend on the internet.

Why should I change from my existing dial up to broadband?

  • Broadband is many times faster than dial up.
  • Its always online, no dial up, you are connected all the time.
  • Your existing phone line is always available for incoming/outgoing calls .
  • Internet access with broadband is generally less expensive that with a dial up solution.
  • No waiting for incoming emails.
  • You know how much you pay all the time.
  • No need to worry about how much time you spend online.
  • You can avail of emerging applications e.g. VOIP & video-conferencing.
  • Wireless broadband enables you to upload files and download files at very fast speeds.

Can I get Wireless Broadband in any location where you have coverage ?

Wireless Broadband requires you to have an unobstructed view from the highest point of your building to the transmission location – which is normally located on a “high point” in your locality. To ensure that this is possible, BBnet can undertake a line of sight (LOS) test on your premises . This ensures that the signal is strong and reliable enough to avail of BBnet’s wireless broadband service. You can our coverage map here.

What equipment is used to receive wireless broadband?

A flat panel antennae  is mounted on your premises exterior at roof level and a 10 metre long CAT 5 ethernet cable is run to the ethernet port of your computer/network.

Why should I go for wireless versus satellite?

Satellite broadband is broadband with limitations. Most Satellite broadband solutions still requires a conventional telephone line to transit data upstream, thereby precluding users from using many of the newer and increasingly popular applications, (e.g. VOIP. Online gaming, video etc). There are no such limitations with wireless broadband. Wireless broadband is also more cost effective and offers faster upload speeds.

Is there a minimum contract period?

Yes. You are required to sign up for 12 months. After the initial 12 months, the contract is automatically renewed but with a 30 day notice perod for cancellation of your service. Your initial subscription includes the installation fee plus one months subscription in advance. Payment thereafter is normally by direct debit, at the start of each month.

What operating system will work with this service?

Windows 7, Windows NT, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OS X ,  Linux.

When I connect to broadband with BBnet what should I do with my existing Internet dial up account?

You should cancel your existing dial up account. In addition, if you are paying for an email account today, you should consider terminating it as this represents a further saving to you. BBnet can provide you with a replacement email address, free of charge.

Is wireless broadband secure?

At BBnet we have set up a tiered approach to ensure that our customer’s broadband is as secure as possible.
Tier 1: Network identity has been concealed which acts as the first line of defence when hackers or non authorised individuals try to access the wireless network
Tier 2: A client access control mechanism has been implemented which only allows authorised individuals to connect to the wireless network
Tier 3: Protection from ‘Data Sniffing’ has been averted by using military standard encryption
Tier 4: Measures to protect authorised users gain unauthorised access to network & client equipment have been used

It is the responsibility of customers to ensure that you are protected from viruses, spam, spyware etc. We recommend that all subscribers follow the best practices promoted by the Irish government sponsored site : www.makeitsecure.ie. Some additional resources that may help are listed below:
